Lifting equipment: Types and dates of technical tests

żuraw, pslift

Companies using crane equipment subject to full and limited supervision are required to carry out technical tests on these devices.

We distinguish 3 types of technical testing cranes:

  • Receiving tests
  • Periodic examination
  • Ad hoc examination

Receiving tests – first test of the crane device when it is completed under ready-to-work conditions.

Before issuing a decision on the operation of a crane deviceThe competent authority of the technical supervision body shall carry out the following activities:

  • checks the completeness of documents,
  • check its technical status and marking,
  • verify the conformity of equipment with on-site documentation of the device,
  • performs an in-use test in the operator.

The scope of the receiving test should include:

  • check according to the instructions for use,
  • carrying out tests on the operation of the device,
  • carrying out tests with overload or equivalent before operating.

Periodic examination – in-service testing of equipment under full supervision.

The purpose of the periodic testing of lifting equipment is to:

  • whether the recommendations set out in the protocol from the previous study have been met,
  • no damage or change in the condition of the device affecting the safety of operation
  • there are and work properly security and protective devices,
  • the information and instructions have been placed on the device and are legible and understandable,
  • the device requires corrective action.

During the periodic examination, the competent technical supervision body shall verify:

  • the review book,
  • device maintenance log,
  • electrical measurement protocols,
  • qualification certificates for maintenance and servicing of the device.

The range of periodic testing of lifting equipment shall include:

  • inspection of the equipment in accessible places,
  • performing tests of operation in the installed assembly version with sufficient load to determine that the control and working movements of the device, mechanisms, devices
  • the safety and protective performance is correct.

Ad hoc examination divided into :

  • control and operational testing,
  • emergency or accident
  • resulting from current needs

Ad hoc testing – performed in operation, for equipment subject to restricted supervision.

The purpose of the ad hoc control test is to determine whether:

  • the recommendations set out in the minutes of the previous study have been implemented,
  • no damage or change in the condition of the device affecting the safety of the operation of the device or likely to cause a future hazard,
  • there are and work properly protective devices and protective devices
  • warning signs, information and instructions are placed on the device and readable and understandable, the device shall require corrective action.

The range of ad hoc testing should include:

  • inspection of the equipment in accessible places,
  • performing tests of operation in the installed load-free assembly version, where justified by the safety condition of the device, the scope of the ad hoc test may be extended by the competent authority of the technical supervision unit.

In-service ad hoc test – the circumstances justifying the conduct, i.e.:

  • installation in a new location,
  • upgrading or repairing,
  • the replacement of an item.

The purpose of an ad hoc in-service test is to:

  • confirmation that the repair, modernisation, dismantling and re-assembly carried out at a new workplace or replacement of an item do not affect the safe operation of the device.

In-service ad hoc testing shall be carried out at the written request of the operator in the following cases:

  • after exchange of load-bearing chains,
  • after the replacement of gripping devices,
  • after the exchange of boom or lifting mechanisms,
  • after the replacement of security devices,
  • after repairing the lifting mechanism or escalating mechanism,
  • after repair of the load-bearing structure of the device or its components,
  • after the modernisation agreed with the competent authority of the technical supervision unit,
  • changes in the workplace of the device requiring its dismantling and re-assembly.

During an emergency in-service test, the competent technical supervision body shall verify:

  • the device review book and maintenance log,
  • electrical measurement protocols,
  • qualification certificates for maintenance and servicing of the equipment,
  • the necessary drawings and calculations,
  • necessary hydraulic, pneumatic electrical diagrams,
  • supporting documentation.

The scope of the ad hoc in-service test of the device shall include at least:

  • verification of the correct installation and destination of the device in accordance with the operating manual,
  • carrying out tests on the operation of the device in the installed assembly version, with a load sufficient to determine that the control and working movements of the device, the mechanisms and protective and protective devices are functioning correctly,
  • carrying out tests with overload or equivalent before operating.

Emergency or post-accidental examination – carried out by the competent authority of the technical supervision unit in the event of a dangerous damage to the device or an unfortunate accident associated with its operation in order to determine the causes of the incident and to draw conclusions.

The purpose of the ad hoc post-accident and post-accident examination is to:

  • determining the technical condition of the device and the causes of an unfortunate accident or dangerous damage

An emergency test after an accident or emergency shall be carried out by the competent technical supervision body upon receipt of a notification or information relating to a dangerous damage or an unfortunate accident associated with the operation of the device.

The scope of the documentation required to carry out an emergency or accident test and the scope of the examination shall be determined by the competent authority of the technical supervision unit.
